The brace keeps the collarbone area immobilized after a simple break or fracture so the bone can heal. It is designed to wrap around both shoulders and the neck to hold the shoulders back and keep the clavicle stable.

Figure-of-Eight Brace

A figure-of-eight brace is a soft corset that has two shoulder straps that join posteriorly in a figure-of-eight fashion between the scapulae. It is designed for posture support and to prevent excessive abducting of the scapulae when arms are crossed. Although the figure-of-eight brace does not add any structural stability, this corset is useful to prevent superficial wound dehiscence when the incision is between the scapulae. Although this brace is not used as a primary method of spinal stabilization, we commonly apply this brace in postoperative upper thoracic spine injury patients, as their incisions commonly rest between the scapulae. Another potential use of this brace is in patients who are developing a chin-on-chest deformity as it aids in maintaining their head in a more upright posture.
